The lion is an auspicious beast with significant symbolic meaning in both Eastern and Western cultures. In various cultural traditions, it is often imbued with meanings of courage, strength, nobility, and majesty; in traditional Chinese culture, the lion is further associated with might, auspiciousness, and guardianship.
Since ancient times, lions have often been placed in front of doorways, embodying the wish to guard the home and ward off evil to bring good fortune; images of stone, wood-carved, and gold or silver lions are also common in architecture, artifacts, celebrations, and decorations. The lion dance, performed during traditional festivals like the Spring Festival, transforms the lion into a symbol of festivity, unity, and well-wishes.
Therefore, the lion is not only an awe-inspiring animal but also carries the Chinese people’s beautiful expectations for peace, family, dignity, strength, and prosperity. This Longquan celadon lion cup incorporates this traditional auspicious beast into everyday teaware. By using warm, lustrous celadon to carry the majestic and vivid lion motif, a simple cup of tea is elevated with an added layer of culture and blessings.
Shape
Featuring an open, trumpet-shaped body, the rim spreads outwards, while the body tapers gradually towards a small, stable base, resulting in a silhouette that is upright and fluid. The lion motif adorns the body—majestic yet not fierce, lively yet refined—complementing the subtle and warm character of Longquan celadon.
Craftsmanship
Following traditional Longquan celadon techniques, the cup is created through throwing, trimming, decorating, biscuit firing, glazing, and high-temperature firing. The celadon glaze is warm and luminous, with natural variations appearing in the glaze color; the lion motif emerges subtly against the glaze, combining the antique elegance of traditional vessels with aesthetic appeal.
Capacity Approx. 45ml
A compact capacity perfect for gongfu tea, allowing for one small portion at a time. This facilitates control over the amount of tea consumed and helps the drinker focus more deeply on the aroma, flavor, and aftertaste of each infusion.
Suitable Teas
Suitable for gongfu tea varieties such as rock tea, Dancong, Tieguanyin, Pu-erh, and black tea; it is particularly well-suited for use with a gaiwan or a small teapot for shared tasting.
Why choose the Lion Cup?
Because what you drink is tea, but what you carry is culture, and what you convey are blessings.
The lion symbolizes courage and strength, nobility and majesty, guardianship and auspiciousness; meanwhile, Longquan celadon presents the subtle beauty of the East through its warm glaze. Combined, this small 45ml cup offers not just practical utility, but a unique cultural expression.
For personal use, it adds a sense of ritual to your daily tea practice; as a gift, it serves as a beautiful wish for peace, protection, nobility, and prosperity.
